Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing diseases in Canada with more than 60,000 new cases yearly. Nine out of ten people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. As an alternative treatment, one study is demonstrating that medicinal cannabis can help with blood sugar and control and even weight loss. And even though for some individuals cannabis may cause an increase in appetite, for the subjects in the study weight gain did not appear to be a problem and even appeared to improve how carbohydrates were metabolized in medicinal cannabis users.
Results of the study, titled ‘The Impact of Marijuana Use on Glucose, Insulin, and Insulin Resistance among US Adults,” published in the Americ Journal of Medicine in July 2013. …“Of the participants in our study sample, 579 were current marijuana users and 1975 were past users. In multi-variable adjusted models, current marijuana use was associated with 16% lower fasting insulin levels and 17% lower HOMA-IR (insulin resistance). We found significant associations between marijuana use and smaller waist circumferences.”
