Medicinal Cannabis as a Possible Treatment for Autism?

The number of children with autism has increased significantly in Canada and the United States, but the cause – whether it’s environmental, genetic, or a result of better diagnostic tests – remains an elusive mystery.

The most comprehensive report on rising rates has come from the National Epidemiologic Database for the Study of Autism in Canada. Released last year, it found increases in autism diagnoses in Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador and southeastern Ontario. Source CTV News

There is no cure for Autism and when a child is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, families face the next challenge: choosing treatments and therapies for their child.

Cannabis as a possible treatment for Autism….

While cannabinoids have been proven beneficial for a number of illnesses even for children, it’s efficacy for autism still lacks research today…. At best, we’d say it’s been anecdotal at best. But that might all just change.

An Israeli doctor by the name of Dr. Adi Eran will be heading a formal clinical research on the effects of medical cannabis on both autistic teenagers and children. Dr. Eran heads the pediatrics neurology department at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center. This will be the first of its kind and if the results are favorable, marijuana will save the lives of millions again, this time those who are living with autism as well as their families.
