Modified Grapes

This one comes from GMO (Garlic Cookies) crossed with Purple Punch. Smell the outside of the piece and you get grape candy and berries, which is the Purple Punch side. Break it open and the GMO shows up: roasted garlic, fuel and funk. On the inhale it is sweet berry, and the exhale turns spicy and gassy. The first few minutes are in your head, clearing out stress. After that it drops into your body and stays there for two to four hours.

Granddaddy Purple

Ken Estes bred Granddaddy Purple in the Bay Area in 2003 by crossing Purple Urkle with Big Bud. Purple Urkle gives it the grape and berry flavour and the purple colour the strain is named for, and Big Bud adds weight to the body effect. As hash it is the sweetest of the three and has none of the garlic or diesel that Modified Grapes carries. Expect a lift in mood to start, a slow slide into full relaxation, and a strong appetite along the way.

Afghan Kush

Afghan Kush is a landrace indica from the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, a region that has been making hash for hundreds of years. Northern Lights and Skunk #1 both trace back to it. If you want hash that tastes like hash, this is the pick: earthy, piney and kush forward with a sweet woody finish. It is also the one that puts you down fastest. There is very little head buzz, the body goes heavy within minutes, and sleep is not far behind.

What the hash looks and feels like

There is enough oil in these that the warmth of your hand softens them. You can roll a piece into a thin snake or pinch it into small crumbs without heating it first. Put a flame to it and it bubbles, which tells you it is mostly resin with very little plant matter left in.

Ways to smoke it

• In a joint: roll a snake and lay it down the middle. This suits Modified Grapes and Granddaddy Purple best because the sweet flavour lasts the whole joint.
• On a bowl: crumble a little over the top of your flower.
• Hot knives or a small glass pipe: the classic way, and the best match for Afghan Kush since it needs nothing added.
