Cannabidiol (CBD) could be an Effective Treatment for IBS?

(IBS) Irritable bowel syndrome  (AKA as spastic colon) is a common disorder that affecting approximately 20 % of Canadians, predominantly women. There is no known cause and as of yet, there are no effective treatments are available.

IBS can cause:

  • Painful lower abdominal cramping
  • Gas
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea alternating with Constipation

The symptoms of IBS are similar to with other diseases such as: Crohn’s, Ulcerative colitis, Diverticulitis, and even Colorectal cancer, so it is imperative for a person experiencing these symptoms to consult their health care provider for a proper diagnosis. IBS is a chronic disease but the symptoms aren’t always present, long term management of IBS is needed .

Some hope for IBS sufferers…

A 2008 study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology sought to explore the therapeutic effects of CBD on the digestive tract. Researchers determined this by measuring the role of cannabidiol in influencing intestinal motility and intestinal inflammation in mice. The results showed that CBD supplementation helped to significantly reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. In this way, researchers were able to return the mice’s pooping schedule back to normal. The article concluded that “In view of its low toxicity in humans, cannabidiol may represent a good candidate to normalize motility in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.” To read full article click here  Read full article
