Years ago, a physician who suspected heart disease would probably not refer the patient to a gum specialist. The same went for diabetes, pregnancy, or just about any other medical condition. Times have changed. The past 5 to 10 years have seen ballooning interest in possible links between mouth health and body health. Read full article on Oral Health: The Mouth-Body Connection
Peter is a firm believer in good daily oral hygiene and practices oil pulling. He believes this is one of the best ways to remove bacteria and promote healthy teeth and gums. In fact, it’s been proven to be even more effective than flossing.
Oil pulling is an ancient Indian Ayurvedic treatment and may be used as a daily treatment to:
- Help boost the immune system
- Reduce inflammation
- Help prevent cavities
- Help prevent halitosis (bad breath) and more!
And because it reduces inflammation it may even help prevent heart disease. There are even studies on the benefits of Oil pulling which you can access here
Oil pulling is essentially taking some oil (1 tbsp of coconut oil) in your mouth, and then swishing it around for 15-20 min. No gargling. No swallowing. You can read more on the how to and the health benefits by clicking clicking here
Peter uses Coconut oil for oil pulling, which is also has antifungal and antibacterial properties, and also uses clove and peppermint essential oils as part of his oral hygiene protocol.
Clove essential oil contains a component called Eugenol which is a powerful antibacterial ,which can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth. Clove oil can also be used to numb pain from a toothache, as studies have shown it has the same numbing affect as benzocaine. It can also be used topically to help numb and heal the pain from canker sores, This is a powerful oil and should never be used full strength on any open sores, but rather diluted in a carrier oil . Peppermint essential oil also has powerful antibacterial properties which are effective against a number of bacteria including the anaerobic strains that tend to thrive in the mouth.
Peter also uses Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking Soda) As part of his Dental hygiene protocol you can read all about the benefits of this natural treatment by clicking here
