How to Smoke Hash in a Pipe
A pipe is the simplest way to smoke hash, and also the easiest way to waste it. Put a chunk straight onto a bare bowl and it melts, drips through the hole and clogs the stem before you get a proper hit.

Whatever you use, a screen is the cheapest upgrade there is for smoking hash. Brass, stainless steel and glass screens all work. Glass screens do not get as hot and are easy to clean.
How to smoke hash in a pipe
Method 1: on a bed of flower (easiest)
- Grind a little flower and fill the bowl about two thirds. This is your base. It stops the hash running into the hole and keeps the bowl lit.
- Break off a small piece of hash. About the size of a grain of rice to a lentil to start.
- Crumble or flatten it on top. Soft hash: roll it into a thin snake and lay it across. Hard hash: crumble it with your fingers or a knife.
- Light the edge, not the middle. Low flame, angled in from the side. Draw slowly and let the flower carry the hash.
Method 2: hash on its own, on a screen
- Put a screen in the bowl.
- Add a few small pieces of hash rather than one lump. Small pieces burn evenly.
- Hold the flame just above the hash, not on it. You want it to melt and smoke, not blacken.
- Take short, gentle draws. Hash on its own is strong. Wait a few minutes before going again.
Soft hash vs hard hash
Soft hash, like hand-rubbed Afghan and Indian, melts quickly. It wants a screen or a flower base, and a gentle flame. Warm it between your fingers and it rolls into a snake that lies flat on the bowl. Try Afghan Cream ($35) or Paki Gum ($45).
Hard hash, like most Moroccan and Lebanese, crumbles rather than bends. It burns more like flower and is easier in a pipe. Crumble it straight over the bowl. Try Moroccan Blonde ($50) or Lebanese Blonde Stamp ($60).
If a hard piece will not break up, warm it for a second with a lighter held well below it, then crumble it while it is soft.
Mistakes that waste hash
- A big lump on a bare bowl. It melts, runs into the stem and clogs the pipe.
- Torching it. A direct, close flame burns off the flavour and turns it to charcoal. Keep the flame above, not on.
- Using too much. Hash is stronger than flower. A small piece goes a long way.
- Grinding soft hash. It gums up the grinder. Use your fingers or a knife on a rolling tray instead.
Cleaning hash out of a pipe
Hash leaves more sticky resin than flower. A dirty pipe tastes harsh and pulls badly.
- Knock out what you can, and pull out the screen.
- Put the pipe in a zip bag with isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) and a spoonful of coarse salt.
- Shake it for a couple of minutes. The salt scrubs, the alcohol dissolves the resin.
- Soak it for 20 to 30 minutes if it is badly caked.
- Rinse well with hot water and let it dry fully before you use it.
Metal screens can go in the same bag, or swap them out. They are cheap. Wooden pipes should not be soaked in alcohol. Scrape them out instead.
