How to Use a Distillate Syringe: 5 Ways and the Dose Math

A distillate syringe is the most flexible thing in the concentrates section. The same gram can go on a joint, into a dab rig, into a pan of brownies or straight under your tongue. It is also the easiest product to overdo, because there is almost nothing in it but THC.
Here is what is in a THC distillate syringe, how to get it out without a mess, five ways to use it, and how to work out a dose.
What is in the syringe
Distillate is cannabis oil that has been refined until almost everything except the cannabinoid is gone. The flavour and smell go with it, which is why plain distillate tastes of very little.
The heat in that process also decarboxylates the THC. That matters: raw flower and hash need heating before they do much when eaten, but distillate is already active. You can eat it as it comes.
The syringes we carry
| Syringe | What it is | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Canna-Oil Plus 95% Distillate | 95% delta 9 THC distillate, neutral taste | $19 each, 5 for $75, 10 for $120 |
| Boost THC Distillate Glass Syringe | 1000 mg THC in a Luer lock glass syringe; Natural, or flavoured as Girl Scout Cookies, Pineapple Express, Pink Kush, Jack Herer or Gelato | $20 Natural, $22 flavoured |
If you are deciding between distillate and something with more flavour, our live resin vs distillate comparison goes through the trade-off.
Step one: warm it up
At room temperature distillate is thick, close to honey that has been in the fridge. Pushing the plunger hard is how people crack syringes and lose half a gram onto the counter.
- Stand the syringe in a cup of warm tap water, cap on, for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Dry it off and press the plunger slowly. It should move with light pressure.
- Still stiff? Give it another few minutes in fresh warm water.
Do not use boiling water, a microwave or a lighter. Warm is enough, and direct heat can damage the syringe and scorch the oil.
Five ways to use a distillate syringe
1. On a joint or a bowl
Put a thin line of distillate along the inside of a rolling paper before you add the flower, or a small dot on top of a packed bowl. It is the simplest way to make ordinary flower stronger. Keep the line thin, or it runs.
2. Dabbing
Squeeze a small bead onto the end of a dab tool and use it like any other concentrate. Because it is so pure, a bead the size of a grain of rice goes a long way. Our dabbing guide covers the setup.
3. Moon rocks
Coat a bud in distillate, then roll it in kief. That is a homemade moon rock. Our moon rock guide walks through it.
4. Eat it straight
Since distillate is already activated, a small drop under the tongue or on a cracker works without cooking. Start very small. See the dose section below.
5. Edibles
Stir distillate into warm, melted butter or oil, mix well, then use that fat in your recipe. There is no decarbing step and no straining. It is the cleanest way to make edibles with a known dose.
Working out the dose
This is the part that matters. Taking the Boost syringe as the example, 1000 mg of THC in one syringe:
| Amount of the syringe | THC | Split across 16 squares |
|---|---|---|
| The whole syringe | 1000 mg | 62.5 mg each |
| A quarter | 250 mg | about 16 mg each |
| A tenth | 100 mg | about 6 mg each |
Health Canada suggests new users start with 2.5 mg of THC or less. A tenth of one syringe in a 16-square pan still puts about 6 mg in each square. The whole syringe in that same pan puts 62.5 mg in each, which is far more than most people should eat in one sitting.
When eating it, wait at least two hours before taking more. Edibles can take that long to start. Our edibles dosing chart and first-timer dosing guide go into more detail.
Storing it
- Cap on, plunger up. Store it upright so nothing creeps into the tip.
- Cool and dark. A drawer or cupboard is fine. Heat and light slowly break THC down.
- Out of reach of children and pets. A syringe of distillate looks like nothing in particular, which is the problem.
Quick answers
Is THC distillate already decarbed?
Yes. It is activated during distillation, so it can be eaten without cooking.
How do you get distillate out of a syringe?
Warm it in a cup of warm water for a few minutes, then press the plunger slowly.
Can you smoke a distillate syringe?
Not on its own, but you can dab it, or add it to a joint or bowl.
How much THC is in a distillate syringe?
It depends on the product. Our Boost syringes hold 1000 mg of THC. Canna-Oil Plus is 95% THC distillate.
Glass or plastic?
Glass handles warming better and does not flex. Plastic is fine if you warm it gently.
