Moon Rock Weed: What It Is, How Strong It Is, How to Make It

By TNR October 13, 2026 6 min read

Moon rocks are the strongest thing you can still call flower. A bud soaked in cannabis oil, rolled in kief, and left to dry until it looks like something that fell out of the sky.

They are also one of the most overpriced products in the market, because the recipe is three ingredients and most people already own two of them.

What moon rock weed actually is

Three layers, from the inside out:

  • A dense nug of flower. Usually indica dominant, usually a solid AAAA bud, because a loose airy one falls apart in the next step.
  • A coat of cannabis oil. Hash oil or distillate, brushed or dripped over the bud until it is sticky all the way round.
  • A dusting of kief. The loose trichome powder that collects in the bottom chamber of a grinder. It sticks to the oil and gives moon rocks their grey, cratered look.

The name and the format were made famous by the rapper Kurupt and his partner Dr. Zodiak, who sold them as Kurupt’s Moonrock in California. Everything sold as moon rocks since is a version of that idea.

How strong are they?

Strong enough that people who smoke every day get caught out.

Ordinary flower tests somewhere in the high teens to the low thirties for THC. Moon rocks are commonly quoted around 50 percent, because you are stacking two concentrates on top of a bud. The real number depends entirely on the oil and kief used, and most moon rocks sold online carry no lab result at all, so treat any figure on a label you cannot check as marketing.

What matters in practice: a pinch of moon rock does what a full bowl of flower does. Plan for that before you light it.

How to smoke them without wasting them

Do not put them in a grinder. The oil gums up the teeth and the kief you paid for ends up stuck to metal. Break them apart with your fingers or snip them with scissors.

A pipe or bong works best. Moon rocks are dense and greasy, so they burn slowly and need a steady flame. Put a thin layer of regular flower at the bottom of the bowl first so nothing gets pulled through the screen.

Joints are hard work. An oil soaked bud does not like to stay lit, and a joint packed with moon rock runs and canoes. If you want one in a joint, crumble a small amount into regular flower rather than rolling it straight.

Go slow. One small hit, then wait fifteen minutes. The effect builds and lasts longer than flower, and there is no taking back a second bowl you did not need.

Why most store bought moon rocks are not worth it

When you buy moon rocks you are buying three things at once, and you cannot inspect any of them.

You cannot see the bud underneath the coating, so you have no idea whether it was a top shelf nug or popcorn trim. You do not know what the oil is, how much was used, or whether it was cut. And the kief layer hides all of it.

That is why so many come out harsh, dry, or weaker than the price suggests. A good one is great. A bad one is mid flower wearing a costume.

How to make moon rocks at home

You need the three layers and some patience.

  1. Pick a dense bud. A gram or so of tight, well cured flower. Any of our AAAA strains works, and the indicas give the heaviest result. Black Bubba and GMO Oreoz are good starting points.
  2. Warm the oil. A distillate syringe is the easiest way to do this, because you can control how much goes on. Our Canna-Oil Plus 95% distillate syringes are made for exactly this. Sit the syringe in a cup of warm water for a few minutes so it flows.
  3. Coat the bud. Hold it by the stem, or skewer it on a toothpick, and work the oil over it slowly until it is evenly sticky. Thin and even beats thick and patchy.
  4. Roll it in kief. Tip your grinder’s kief onto a clean plate and roll the bud through it until it is fully covered. If you do not have enough kief saved, our guide to making dry ice kief gets you a lot of it in one go.
  5. Let it dry. Leave it somewhere cool, out of the light, for a day or two until the surface is no longer tacky. Store it in a glass jar like any other flower.

Doing it yourself means you know exactly what is in every layer, and a gram of AAAA plus a little distillate costs far less than a gram of shop bought moon rock.

Quick answers

Are moon rocks the same as caviar?
Often, yes. “Caviar” is used for the same oil and kief coated bud. Some brands also use the word for unrelated concentrates, so check what the product actually is.

Can you vape moon rocks?
Not well in most dry herb vaporizers. The oil coats the chamber. A pipe or bong is the better tool.

How long do moon rocks last?
Stored in an airtight glass jar, cool and dark, they keep about as long as regular cured flower.

Are moon rocks too strong for beginners?
Usually, yes. If you are new, start with flower and work up.

The short version

Moon rocks are bud, oil and kief. The strength is real, the quality is a gamble, and the best ones are often the ones you make yourself from flower and oil you trust. Start with an AAAA bud and a distillate syringe, and keep the doses small.

For adults 19 and over. Moon rocks are much stronger than regular cannabis; start with a very small amount. Do not drive or operate machinery after use. THC figures quoted are typical ranges, not lab results for any specific product.
