How to Grind Weed Without a Grinder

The grinder is in your other jacket, at your friend’s place, or rolled under the couch where it will stay until you move. The weed is right here.
Good news: the grinder is one of the least necessary tools in cannabis. Almost anything in a kitchen does the job, and a couple of options do it better than the cheap grinder most people own.
Why grinding matters at all
A whole bud burns unevenly. The outside catches, the inside stays dense, and a joint packed with chunks runs down one side while the other stays green.
Breaking it up gives the flame more surface to work with and lets air move through evenly. That is the whole job.
Go too far the other way and you get powder. Powder packs tight, burns hot and harsh, and falls straight through a bowl screen. What you want is somewhere in between, loose and even, like coarse tea leaves.
The methods, from best to worst
Scissors in a shot glass. The best option most people have. Drop a bud into a shot glass or small cup, put the scissor blades in, and snip repeatedly for twenty or thirty seconds. The glass keeps everything contained and the result is close to what a decent grinder gives you. Kitchen scissors are better than craft scissors because the blades are heavier.
Knife and cutting board. Pull the bud into a few smaller pieces, then chop like you are mincing herbs. Use a sharp knife. A dull one squashes the bud instead of cutting it and leaves resin all over the board.
By hand. Pull the bud apart along its natural stems, then roll the small pieces between your fingers. Slow, gives a fluffy result that works well in joints, and costs you some resin, which ends up on your fingertips instead of in the joint.
Pill bottle and a coin. Put the bud and a coin in a clean pill bottle, close it, and shake hard for a minute or two. The coin breaks it up as it bounces around. Works better with drier bud and gives an uneven result, but it is quick.
Coffee or spice grinder. Pulse it, do not hold the button down. Two or three short pulses gives a usable grind. Holding it turns everything to dust in seconds. Clean it after unless you want your morning coffee to taste like last night.
Cheese grater. Works on dense, dry buds using the coarse side. Sticky bud clogs it immediately. Expect to lose a fair amount stuck in the holes.
Mortar and pestle. Tempting but not great. It crushes rather than cuts, which mashes the trichomes and gives you a damp clump instead of loose flower. Fine for edibles, poor for smoking.
Which method for what
| Using it for | Best method | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Joint or blunt | Scissors, or by hand | Coffee grinder held down |
| Bowl or bong | Scissors or knife | Anything that makes powder |
| Dry herb vape | Scissors, a little finer | Big chunks |
| Edibles or butter | Coffee grinder pulsed | Nothing really |
Vapes like a finer grind than joints because heat has to reach every bit of the flower without a flame. Edibles do not care at all, because everything is getting soaked in fat anyway. If that is where it is headed, our cannabutter guide picks up from there.
Tips that make any method work better
Dry bud grinds easier. If your flower is sticky and fresh, a few minutes out of the jar firms it up enough to cut cleanly. Do not leave it out for hours.
Pull the stems first. Stems do not grind, they just poke holes in rolling papers.
Grind right before you use it. Broken flower has much more surface exposed to air, so it loses smell and flavour faster than whole buds. Our notes on storing flower explain why.
Use a piece of paper as a tray. Fold a sheet in half and work over it. Whatever falls off goes straight back in.
Rolling once it is ground
Hand ground or scissor cut flower is a little fluffier than grinder output, which is actually good for joints. It packs evenly and burns slow.
If you need a refresher on the rolling part, there is a guide for joint rollers and another for Backwoods.
Questions
Can you just break it up with your fingers?
Yes. It is slow and you lose some resin, but it gives a nice texture for joints.
Does grinding make weed stronger?
No. It just makes it burn evenly, so you get what is already there.
Is a coffee grinder bad for weed?
Only if you hold it down. Short pulses work fine.
Why does my joint keep running?
Usually uneven grind, chunks in some places and fine bits in others. Scissors fix that.
How fine should it be for a vape?
Finer than for a joint, but not powder. Roughly the texture of dried oregano.
What about the kief?
Hand methods lose it to your fingers and surfaces. A grinder with a kief catcher is the only way to actually collect it.
Or skip the whole thing
A grinder costs less than you think. Our two piece hemp grinder is $7, biodegradable, and small enough to keep in every jacket you own, which solves the original problem permanently.
And if grinding is the part you never want to do, premium shake comes already broken down and ready to roll. More on what shake actually is in our shake guide, and the rest of the flower is in the flower range.
