How to Store Cannabis Flower

By TNR June 28, 2026 4 min read

How long does cannabis stay fresh?

Properly stored cannabis flower holds peak potency and flavour for 6-12 months. Improperly stored — sitting in a clear jar on a sunny counter, or in a plastic bag on top of the fridge — the same flower can lose noticeable potency in 4-6 weeks and drop into brittle/harsh territory by month 3. The difference is entirely storage conditions: light, temperature, humidity, and air exposure.

The four things that degrade cannabis

Light is the biggest killer. UV breaks down THC into CBN — a milder, sleepier cannabinoid — and destroys terpenes. A quarter kept in a clear glass jar on a windowsill can lose 20% of THC in 3 months.

Heat speeds every chemical reaction that degrades the flower. Above 70°F (21°C), THC decarboxylation and terpene evaporation accelerate. Above 85°F, cannabinoids and terps break down fast.

Humidity matters both directions. Too dry (under 55% RH) and the flower gets brittle, terpenes evaporate off the trichomes, smoke is harsh. Too humid (over 65%) and mould risk climbs — visible mycelium can appear within a week on damp buds.

Air exposure oxidizes terpenes and cannabinoids. Every time you open a jar, fresh oxygen hits the flower. A jar opened once a week ages faster than one opened once a month with the same total exposure minutes.

The optimal storage setup

  • Container: Airtight glass jar with a proper seal (Mason jar with new gasket, or dedicated cannabis storage jar like a CVault)
  • Humidity control: Boveda pack (58% or 62% RH depending on preference) — 58% for storage longevity, 62% for smoothness while smoking
  • Location: Cool cupboard, drawer, or closet — away from any window, appliance, or heat source
  • Temperature: Below 70°F/21°C consistently
  • Position: Upright, jar 60-75% full (too much headspace means more air per gram)

This is the same setup cannabis testing labs use for reference storage. Not fancy, not expensive.

What NOT to use

Plastic baggies: Static charge pulls trichomes off the flower into the plastic walls. You literally lose potency to friction with the bag. Also plastic offgasses trace compounds into the flower over time.

Clear glass: Same physics as clear jars in the previous section — light exposure kills terpenes and degrades THC.

Fridge: Temperature is fine but the humidity cycles when you open the door introduce condensation that promotes mould.

Freezer: Only works if the flower is completely dry (which harshens the smoke) AND you don’t open the container until fully thawed. Otherwise ice crystals shatter trichomes and moisture forms on rewarming. Freezer works for long-term stash IF done right, but most people do it wrong.

Real shelf-life numbers

  • Properly stored (airtight glass, Boveda, cool dark): 12+ months near-peak potency, 18-24 months usable
  • Original dispensary packaging (plastic jar, no humidity control): 3-6 months near-peak, noticeably degraded by 8-9 months
  • Plastic baggie in a drawer: 2-4 months near-peak, brittle and harsh by 5-6 months
  • On a windowsill in a clear jar: 4-8 weeks near-peak, significant degradation by 3 months

How to tell your flower has degraded

  • Turns light brown or greyish (should be vivid green)
  • Trichomes look flat or missing under a jeweler’s loupe
  • Terpene smell weakens or shifts to hay/grass notes
  • Buds crumble to dust when squeezed instead of holding structure
  • Smoke feels sleepier/heavier than expected (CBN accumulation)
  • Harsh throat hit on a strain that used to smoke smooth

Any of these on flower under 6 months old means storage is the problem, not the product. Fix the setup and next batch will stay fresh.

Concentrates, edibles, and vape carts follow different rules

Concentrates (rosin, live resin, budder): Refrigerate immediately. Freeze for long-term. Same airtight/no-light rules. Silicone containers under 30 days, then transfer to glass.

Edibles: Follow the packaging expiry. Most gummies keep 6-9 months sealed at room temp, chocolates 12+ months. Freezer extends indefinitely for both.

Vape cartridges: Store upright to prevent leaking. Cool dark cupboard. Oil separation into layers is normal — warm to room temp and gently swirl before use.

Bulk buying strategy

If you buy an ounce or QP, portion immediately into smaller jars (7g or 14g each), each with its own Boveda pack. Open only one jar at a time. This keeps the other portions at freshness peak until you get to them.

A well-stored QP portioned into 8x14g jars stays fresh across 4-6 months of consumption. Same QP kept in one big jar and opened weekly starts degrading noticeably by month 2.
