Live Resin vs Distillate: What Is the Difference?

By TNR October 20, 2026 5 min read

Live resin and distillate both end up in the same places: vape carts, dab rigs, syringes. They can cost about the same per gram, and plenty of carts list both on the label. They are not the same product, and once you know how each one is made, picking between them is easy.

Live resin keeps the plant’s flavour. Distillate strips it out so it can be close to pure THC. Everything else follows from that.

How live resin is made

The plant is cut at harvest and frozen straight away, before it is dried or cured. The frozen material goes through a hydrocarbon extraction, usually butane, propane or a blend, in a closed-loop system. Then the solvent is purged off.

The freezing is the point. Terpenes, the compounds behind a strain’s smell and taste, are volatile, and a lot of them are lost during weeks of drying and curing. Freezing the plant fresh skips that step, so more of the original profile makes it into the jar. That is what “live” means.

What comes out is a sticky, saucy or sugary concentrate that smells like the strain it came from.

How distillate is made

Distillate starts as a crude extract, often from dried plant material. The crude is winterized: mixed with ethanol and chilled so the fats and waxes drop out and can be filtered off. Then it goes through short-path distillation, which uses heat under a vacuum to separate THC from almost everything else.

Terpenes boil off in that process. The result is a thick, clear, golden oil that is very high in THC and has almost no taste or smell of its own. That is why most distillate carts have terpenes added back in afterwards, either from cannabis or from other plants, to give them a strain flavour.

What the difference feels like

Taste. This is the one everyone notices. A live resin hit tastes like the strain. Distillate tastes like whatever terpenes were added to it, and on its own it tastes of very little.

Strength. Distillate wins on THC percentage. That does not always mean it feels stronger. A lot of people find live resin feels fuller and more like smoking good flower, and distillate feels cleaner and more one-note. That part is subjective, so do not take anyone’s word for it, including ours. Try both.

Consistency. Distillate is close to identical batch to batch. Live resin varies with the plant it came from, which is the point if you are chasing a strain and a drawback if you just want the same thing every time.

Which one for which job

You want flavour from a vape. Live resin. Read the label closely, because “live resin terpenes” added to distillate is not the same thing as a cart full of live resin.

You want strong, reliable carts that taste of the strain on the box. Distillate with added terpenes. Our Golden Monkey Extracts carts ($30, 1000 mg, 510 thread) and Hippo carts ($25, 1 mL) are both distillate.

You dab. Live resin, almost always. Distillate dabs fine, but you lose the reason most people dab in the first place.

You cook or make your own. Distillate. It is already activated, so it can go straight into food, and it mixes in without changing the taste much. It is also what you want for coating buds. Our moon rock guide uses a distillate syringe for exactly that reason.

You want the most THC per dollar. Distillate.

Buying the Banana Live Resin by the 7 g brings it down to about $10.70 a gram, which is the cheapest way into live resin we carry.

Or skip the choice

The Heisenberg Extractions 3g Dual Vape ($55) puts both in one device. One chamber holds 1.5 g of live resin, the other holds 1.5 g of distillate, each a different strain, and a switch on the side picks which one you draw from. The two oils never mix. If you have never tried them back to back, it is the easiest way to find out which one you prefer.

Things people get wrong

“Live resin is solventless.” It is not. It is a hydrocarbon extract. The solventless fresh-frozen product is live rosin, which is ice water hash pressed with heat. Different process, different product.

“Distillate is fake.” It is real THC, just refined. What can be misleading is a label that implies the flavour came from the strain when it was added afterwards.

“Higher THC means a better product.” It means a more refined one. Whether that is better depends on what you are using it for.

Bottom line

Pick live resin when you care how it tastes. Pick distillate when you care how strong it is, or you are putting it into something else. If you cannot decide, the dual vape lets you try both, or browse all our extracts and THC vapes.

For adults 19 and over. Concentrates are much stronger than flower; start with a very small amount and wait before taking more. Do not drive or operate machinery after use. THC figures are the manufacturer’s labelling. Prices current October 2026.
