Smoking combusts the flower at 900-1,200°F. Combustion converts plant matter into smoke, which contains cannabinoids, terpenes, and combustion byproducts (tar, carbon monoxide, ash particulates). Dry-herb vaping heats the flower to 320-430°F — below combustion. At those temperatures, cannabinoids and terpenes vaporize into a mostly-clear vapor that skips most byproducts. Same starting material, dramatically different smoke chemistry, noticeably different experience.
Vaping at 330-380°F hits most cannabinoids and terpenes cleanly. Above 430°F you start entering combustion-adjacent territory. Below 300°F thin vapor, weak effect.
Combustion smoke contains: cannabinoids, terpenes, tar, particulates, carbon monoxide, pyrolysis byproducts.
Dry-herb vapor contains: cannabinoids, terpenes, water vapor. Traces of pyrolysis products if temperature runs too high.
Cannabinoid delivery per dose is comparable — a well-tuned vape session gets you similar absorption to a joint, sometimes higher because there’s no side-stream loss.
Smoking: Faster peak (5-10 minutes), heavier body feel, more sedative for the same strain, “smoked” flavour, harsher throat.
Vaping: Slower peak (10-20 minutes), cleaner high, more heady/cerebral, terpene-forward flavour, smoother throat.
Switchers often report the vape high feels “different” for the first few sessions — same strain, less body sedation, more lucid. Some love it. Others find it too heady and go back.

Oil vape carts contain distillate + terpenes. On-demand, one puff any time.
Different products, different experiences. Dry-herb gives you full strain profile. Carts are convenient but usually distillate-based (single cannabinoid) with added terps.
Rolling papers and a lighter: $5. Vape is bigger upfront, pays back in 4-8 months of daily use through flower savings.
Vaping produces significantly fewer combustion byproducts than smoking. Studies (Van der Kooy 2008, Abrams 2007) show ~85% reduction in inhaled particulates and near-elimination of CO in dry-herb vapor.
Not zero-risk. High-temp vaping still produces some pyrolysis products. Long-term daily use is understudied. But the reduction vs smoking is real and meaningful.
Once vaped, flower is spent for smoking but still contains 15-30% of original cannabinoids. Save in a jar. Use for:
